Matin James Sles Garrison

June 15, 1964 — February 4, 2024

Lorain, Ohio

Matin James Sles Garrison passed away on February 4, 2024, at the age of 59. He was born on June 15, 1964, in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, to John Samuel Garrison and Bernadette Hightower.

Matin leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion to his family. He leaves behind his mother Bernadette Hightower. He was the devoted father of Dione Spencer (Deceased), Matina Garrison and Ramses Garrison, and cherished grandfather of Dione Spencer Jr., Raekwon Spencer, Asygh Gains, Penelope Garrison-Huling, Lily Garrison and great grandfather of Sharaye Spencer. He was a dear brother to Rhonda George (Deceased), Richee Garrison, Kemi King, Kit King, and Kurt King, and a treasured uncle to a slew of nieces and nephews including but not limited to: Troy Carter, Remy Nash, Kerri Nash, Dory Nash, and Ismiolia Babatunde.

Matin was an ex-husband to Phyllis Garrison, with whom he shared 20 years of marriage. He was also the beloved of Wanda McCoy. His close friends Rodney, Heinz, Levon and many more will miss him dearly.

In Matin's early life he lived in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. In his early teens he professed Christ. Matin and his brothers sang in the choir, and he loved visiting other churches. Their choir was known to tear the church up. His Pastor was his mentor for many years. He visited the Pastor and family when he was in the neighborhood.

This is when he realized his gift was giving. Matin (Jim) came back to the Rock and started a school supply drive for the children, and he received help from the Cleveland Cavaliers and Mayor Frank Jackson. This was his way of giving back to the Rock/community.

Giving back was his way of showing love and his commitment to those he cared for. He would always say "Love is an action word." Many knew his love and will continue his legacy by actively giving back to those in need. Matin was instrumental in bringing people together. He hosted cabaret parties. He loved hosting tie dye parties for the youngsters and chopping down Christmas trees with his nieces and children. He was a kind hearted, loving man who would be ready to have a good time.

Matin found fulfillment in his work and was employed at Hertz rental car for 15 years at the airport before joining Pathways Enrichment Center - Food Bank. Matin's passion for community service led him to establish a young men's mentorship program, leaving a positive impact on many lives. He was known for his generosity and willingness to help others, always ready to assist family and friends in need.

In his leisure time, Matin enjoyed community outreach, playing video games, traveling, cheering for Cleveland sports teams, grilling, and engaging in men's mentoring activities. He had a knack for creating CDs the old-school way and had a passion for collecting hats, sunglasses, and model cars.
