Mary A. Backey

Mary A. Backey, age 73, passed away on August 8, 2023. Born as Mary A. Reed on January 22, 1950 to Fletcher and Bessie B. Reed, her parents who preceded her in death. She dedicated her life to Jesus Christ at age 12, baptized on February 12, 1962, by Rev. B. G. Gilbert. In December 2001, she became a devoted member of Bishop Luther Blackwell's Mega Church, contributing her prayers to the New Members team.

Fondly known as Ann, she graduated from East Technical High School in 1968 and obtained an Administrative Certification from Cuyahoga Community College. Her 36-year career as an Administrative Assistant and Principal Secretary in Cleveland Public Schools concluded with her retirement in 2010. During her retirement, Ann stayed busy and worked part-time in the cafeteria at Oberlin College and AVI.                

Mary (Ann) entered holy matrimony with Daniel Edward Backey III (deceased) on November 11, 1981. A cherished mother of Rochelle Reed, Angella L. Backey, and Nicole C. Backey (Simpson), she also held a special place as a beloved sister among Earlene Moss (Deceased), Geradine Reed, Velma Moss, Samuel Reed, and Jerome Reed. Her legacy extended to two grandchildren, Rodney Cowart Jr. and Shalom N. Simpson.

With warmth and wisdom, Mary Ann Backey enriched the lives of nieces, nephews, cousins, co-workers, and friends alike, leaving an indelible mark as the Reverend Aunt, wise Counselor, Confidant, and Elder. As God's precious daughter, her spirit of love and kindness will forever echo in the hearts of all who were touched by her presence.

Family and friends are welcome on Friday, August 18, 2023, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Slone & Co. Life Celebration Center 3556 W. 130th St. Cleveland, OH 44111. A Homegoing Service will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at 11 a.m., at Mega Church 3170 Scranton Rd., Cleveland, OH 44109. Interment Riverside Cemetery.
