Edna M. Rivera

Jan 25, 1946 — Jul 30, 2026

Cleveland, Ohio

There are people who leave this world and then there are people who leave behind a legacy that lives on through every generation. Edna M. Rivera, was one of those people.

Edna M. Rivera Nieves peacefully went home to be with the Lord on July 30, 2026, at the age of 80, surrounded by the family she spent her entire life loving and bringing together. Born on January 25, 1946, to Teodoro Rivera (D) and Teresa Martínez (D); she lived a life rooted in faith, sacrifice, resilience, and unconditional love. She is now reunited in Heaven with her beloved husband, Herminio J. Nieves, the love of her life.

In 1986, Edna was recruited to join the Cleveland Municipal School District’s Bilingual Program as a founder, and the following year she made the courageous decision to move from Puerto Rico to Cleveland, Ohio, in hopes of creating more opportunities for her children. She believed education could change lives and she proved it by earning both her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees while building a life for her family. For more than 30 years, she poured into her students with patience, compassion and encouragement before retiring in 2012.

But if you asked Edna what her greatest accomplishment was, it would never have been her career. It was her family.

Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her entire world. She loved having everyone together, making memories and reminding each of us how important family truly is. She taught us that love is shown through sacrifice, that faith carries you through life’s hardest moments, and that home isn’t a place…it’s the people you love.

If music was playing or her family was together, there was a good chance she was smiling. Whether it was her devotional music filling the house or salsa playing during a family celebration, she found joy in life’s simple moments. She loved deeply, prayed faithfully, laughed often and made everyone around her feel like they belonged.

Edna is lovingly survived by her children, Luis A. Rivera (Yani), Marie Tere Rivera (Orlando), Marisellie Rivera (Kevin), step daughter Diana (Joe) and stepson Luis.

She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Anniedalyz (Israel), Chrystal (Jeremias), Genesis, Sebastian, Darshan, Luis, Tristan, Paola (Jeremy), Yina and Rafael.

She was blessed with her treasured great-grandchildren: Xayden, Xeilani, Xamarie, Xariana, Elisael, Elizyan, Cattleya, Calym, and Johaniel.

She is also survived by her siblings Teodoro (Elena (D)) and Margarita (Etienne). She was preceded in death by her siblings Humberto and Sonia (Jesus).

She leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews, including Elena, Humberto, Etienne, Dennisse, Jeovani, Weldon, and Agdel, along with countless extended family members, friends, neighbors and former students who were blessed to know her.

The way Edna left this world was a reflection of the way she lived it. Her family remained by her side, holding her hands, praying over her, sharing stories, singing, crying, laughing, and loving her until her very last breath. She spent her life keeping her family together and in the end, she was surrounded by the very people she loved most. It was exactly how she would have wanted it.

Although our hearts are broken, we are at peace knowing she is finally home with her Savior. Her love didn’t end here…it lives on in every lesson she taught, every tradition she started, every sacrifice she made and in every generation that will come after her.

Because of her, we know what unconditional love looks like.
