Parma, Ohio

Daniel P. McCarthy, age 64, of Parma, OH passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2025, following a cardiac arrest suffered on Friday, July 4, 2025.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents Ann (nee Chambers) and James P. Sr.

Dan was the much-loved brother in a family of eight children. He leaves behind: sisters Mary Ellen (Leo) Riley, Carol (Timothy, deceased) Walcheck, Jean (Robert, deceased) Gandee, Lois Malak (Ted Zayda) and brothers: Martin (Shela), Joseph, and James P. Jr. He was the beloved father of Ellyse Patterson. Dan was the uncle to nineteen and the great uncle and great-great uncle to many.

In his youth Dan had a job that required him to make trips to many parts of the country, but his favorite place was his Parma, Ohio, home where he spent all his sixty-four years.

Dan was a dedicated walker. He loved taking long walks with his beautiful dogs that he lovingly cared for over the years. When he wasn’t walking, he was usually riding his bike.

He was fascinated with the history of American Industrial geopolitics, especially with those industrialists who lived in Cleveland and the role that they played in the history of his own family. He spent many hours researching family genealogy.

He loved music and had an encyclopedic knowledge of Jazz and Blues. He loved reading and learning about local history. He loved sharing what he learned with others. He was especially proud of his legacy as the Publisher of the Parma Observer, now in the seventeenth year of circulation

From selling advertising, gathering articles submitted by his wonderful writers, covering parades, festivals and other events and even delivering the paper to local stores, restaurants and shops throughout Parma, Parma Hts., and Seven Hills, this was what Dan loved. In 2014 he was awarded the Parma Mayor’s Citizen of the Month honor and in 2016 accepted an award from the Parma Chamber of Commerce for his work as the Publisher of the Parma Observer.

Dan was well known by many people. He was respected by and spoke highly of all the friends he made over the years, especially those he met while working on the Observer.

Dan was also active in local politics, frequently attending Parma City Council meetings. For a time, he was a member of the local Precinct Select Committee.

Ohio State Representative Sean Brennan and the Mayors of Parma, Parma Hts., and Anthony Biasiotta, the Mayor of Seven Hills are people he called friends. His good friends Jim O’Bryan and Stefan Stefaniuk helped him make the paper something he was proud of every single month.

Dan was a man of conviction who lived as he believed, no matter what others thought His chosen path was not the beaten path. He strove to make the pursuit of this meaningful in his life. He was a proud organ donor, and his generous gifts of life-saving organs will benefit many. His family and friends will miss him forever.
