It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Mr. Charles R. Coleman Jr, 80.
Charles Roosevelt Coleman Jr. was born July 12, 1943, in Cleveland, Ohio to Charles R Coleman Sr and Ella Mae (Walker) Coleman. Charles was the second eldest of three sons born to Charles Sr. and Ella Mae.
Charles attended John Marshall High School in Cleveland where his focused, determined, intelligent and athletic talent was displayed. During his time at John Marshall, Charles lettered in wrestling and was a member of the 1961 State Wrestling Championship team which is considered one of the greatest teams in the history of John Marshall.
After graduating from high school, Charles attended Bowling Green State University and graduated in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education, majoring in Art. Charles served as a teacher after graduation and shortly after was drafted to serve in the military during the Vietnam Conflict. Charles served in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged in 1972. Following his military service Charles worked for the Department of Welfare for many years and retired as a respected supervisor.
After retirement Charles continued to stimulate his intellect, creativity and love for physical activity. Charles continued to enjoy his love of art and created many pieces of art in his home studio. Charles had interest in outdoor activities including fishing and enjoyed raising, training and caring for dogs throughout his life. Charles also remained physically active even through his later years riding his bike throughout the community.
In addition to his individual endeavors Charles was a person who enjoyed talking with those he considered close friends, neighbors and family to discuss different subjects including the history of the West Park Community as well as the history of his family. Over the years he enjoyed spending time with his close buddies and sharing stories about hanging out during different social gatherings.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother William Frank Coleman and brother Marion Coleman. Charles leaves to morn Nephew Kevin Coleman, Nephew Scott Coleman, Sister-in-Law Fontella Coleman of Cleveland, Niece Tyra Grier-Coleman, Great Niece Asha Coleman and Great Nephew Miles Coleman.
Family and friends are welcome on Thursday, November 30, 2023, from 4:30 p.m. until time of Homegoing Service at 5 p.m., at Slone & Co. Funeral Directors 13115 Lorain Ave. Cleveland, OH 44111.
